In the 58th match of the ongoing IPL 2023, Lucknow Super Giants pulled off a heist to defeat Sunrisers Hyderabad by seven wickets. Notably, batting first, Sunrisers Hyderabad started well as opener Anmolpreet Singh smashed 36 runs off just 27 deliveries. His opening partner Abhishek Shamra however once again failed to live up to the expectations as the 22-year-old could score only seven runs off five deliveries.
Later on, Rahul Tripathi (20 runs off 13 deliveries) and skipper Aiden Markram (28 runs off 20 deliveries) tried to bail SRH out of a difficult situation but unfortunately lost their wickets to Yash Thakur and Krunal Pandya respectively. Talking about Krunal Pandya, the LSG skipper picked up two back-to-back wickets of Markram and Glenn Phillips to change the complexion of the game.
South Africa international Heinrich Klaasen took control of the situation afterwards as the 31-year-old hit 47 runs off 29 deliveries while India uncapped batter Abdul Samad smashed 37* runs off 25 deliveries to help SRH post 182 runs in the first innings.
Meanwhile, a controversy broke out in the penultimate over of the first innings when the third umpire reversed the on-field umpire’s decision of a no ball, while the replay suggested otherwise.
When it came to the chase, LSG lost their openers rather cheaply. Kyle Mayers got dismissed for two off 14 deliveries while Quinton de Kock could score 29 deliveries off 19 deliveries. However, things rapidly changed in the middle overs.
Batting at number three, Prerak Mankad played a brilliant innings, scoring 64* runs off 45 deliveries while Marcus Stoinis played a quick cameo of 40 runs off just 25 deliveries.
After he got out, Nicholas Pooran wreaked havoc as the West Indies international scored 44* runs off 13 deliveries to help LSG win the match and improve their standing in the IPL points table. They currently have 13 points from 12 matches while SRH have eight points in 11 matches.
