MS Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) annihilated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) as the former emerged victorious by seven wickets. The two franchises squared off in match 29 of the ongoing IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, April 21.
Chennai skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and put the visitors to bat first. Notably, SRH made a peculiar change in the top order as they demoted Mayank Agarwal down the order, at No. 6, against the yellow brigade. What followed was CSK stamping their authority in every aspect of the contest, starting with the bowling unit restricting the rival side to mere 134 runs.
The opening duo of Harry Brook and Abhishek Sharma could only get 35 runs before the former headed back to the pavilion for just 18 runs. Moreover, SRH got 45 runs in their powerplay (1-6 overs) as the batters failed to shift gears and get the required big runs.
Notably, MS Dhoni’s move to introduce spin shortly after the powerplay paid them rich dividends in the innings. Abhishek notched up three boundaries and one maximum to get 34 to his name before getting dismissed by Ravindra Jadeja. The CSK star all-rounder struck a second blow in the form of Rahul Tripathi to dent SRH’s innings.
Skipper Aiden Markram got 12 runs to his name, whereas down the order, Heinrich Klaasen and Mayank, too, failed to revive the innings and departed for 17 and two runs, respectively. A disciplined bowling performance helped CSK restrict SRH to a paltry 134 for the loss of seven in their 20 overs. Ravindra Jadeja picked a three-wicket haul, whereas Theekshana, Matheesha Pathirana, and Akash Singh got one wicket apiece.
Conway’s fifty steers CSK to fourth win
In response, CSK extended their domination during the chase as the opening duo of Devon Conway and Ruturaj Gaikwad put up a solid stand. The pair swiftly hit the ground running as they got the required big runs with the boundaries.
Notably, Conway took Marco Jansen to the cleaners, as he clobbered 22 runs off the final five balls of the sixth over (1, 4, 4, 6, 4, 4). In addition to this, CSK remained steady in the chase as they got 60 off the powerplay. Despite the fall of three wickets, Conway and Moeen Ali steered the side to their fourth win of the IPL 2023 season. Conway concluded with an unbeaten 77 off 57 balls in the run chase as CSK won by seven wickets.
