Gujarat Titans (GT) took a firm grip of the proceedings after Shubman Gill's dazzling innings propelled the defending champions to their highest total in IPL history against Mumbai Indians (MI) in Qualifier 2 of IPL 2023. Gill's highest IPL score took the home side to an astonishing total of 233 runs, the highest score in playoffs history.
The home side were put into bat first after Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma won the toss following a brief rain delay in Ahmedabad. Rohit's decision was looking like a wise move as the Gujarat openers, Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill, took their time in the powerplay.
However, Gill went into overdrive after the powerplay, smashing the Mumbai bowlers to all parts of the ground. He took a liking to Mumbai's veteran spinner Piyush Chawla, smashing him for 19 runs in an over following three sixes off Akash Madhwal in an over.
While Gill was looking in ominous touch, Sai Sudharsan proved to be a valiant partner for the star opener, finding the boundaries at regular intervals. The young Indian opener sent the record books tumbling after registering the highest individual score in playoffs history.
Hardik Pandya's explosive cameo puts the icing on the cake for GT
The 138 run-stand for the second wicket came to an end after Gill departed for a mind-boggling 129 off just 60 deliveries, not before claiming the Orange Cap, blitzing past Faf du Plessis' tally (730 runs) this season. However, with the hosts looking to end the innings on a high, Sudharsan sacrificed himself, retiring out on a personal score of 43 runs.
Gujarat skipper and star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya took over the responsibility to take his side to a formidable score after smashing Chris Jordan for a boundary and a maximum off the final two deliveries of the first innings. He remained unbeaten at the crease after smoking 28 runs in just 13 deliveries, taking GT to 233 runs after their 20 overs.
