After his switch from Gujarat Titans to Mumbai Indians, Hardik Pandya was subjected to immense criticism during IPL 2024. Many of the MI fans couldn’t accept him as the new captain as the all-rounder was called names and some of them even used racial slurs to describe him. It eventually impacted his performance as Pandya had one of his poorest seasons in the league.

There were question marks on his India future as well, especially after Shivam Dube was added to the T20 World Cup squad. However, the team management backed him and Pandya repaid their faith with consistent performances in the Super Eights. Against Afghanistan in Barbados, the 30-year-old made 32 runs off 24 deliveries, which he bettered against Bangladesh by completing his half-century.

Pandya came out to bat when India lost two back-to-back wickets of Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav. India were under immense pressure but he settled down very soon, playing an aggressive brand of cricket. The Choryasi-born cricketer looked in good touch, completing his half-century in 27 balls. India needed something special towards the fag end of the match to post a competitive total on a good surface and Hardik’s innings provided that as India posted 196 runs in the end.

Star India batter Virat Kohli too looked good with the bat, which is a positive sign for team India. He was struggling with his form but against Bangladesh, he showed his class, scoring 38 runs off 27 deliveries. He was disappointed after losing his wicket but ahead of the business end of the competition, the 35-year-old would be motivated to get better and the innings against Bangladesh should give him the necessary confidence.

India skipper Rohit Sharma once again gave a good start to the team but failed to capitalize. That is one area that the 37-year-old needs to work on at the moment. Meanwhile, Tanzim Sakib and Rishad Hossain picked up two wickets each with the ball. When it came to chase, Bangladesh started well but it was Hardik Pandya who gave the breakthrough picking up the wicket of Litton Das.
