Australia and West Indies kicked off their second and final test match at the Adelaide Oval on December 8, Thursday. It was a pink-ball game and thus started a little later than usual. In the absence of Pat Cummins, Steve Smith was named the captain of the side for the day-night game as he won the toss and elected to bat first.

David Warner and Usman Khawaja showed great intent as they started off the innings for Australia on a high note. Warner looked in good touch as he hit Alzarri Joseph for three boundaries in an over, but the pacer had the last laugh when he dismissed the opener in the final ball of the same over. His wicket brought the in-form Marnus Labuschagne on the crease.

West Indies skipper decided to deploy spin bowlers when Labuschagne took the strike. It was a big risk, knowing the fact of how well the batter tackles the spinners. While Khawaja had gotten his half-century in the first session itself, before Dinner, Labuschagne played a composed knock and got to his fifty in the second session.

Khawaja and Labuschagne shared a brilliant 95-run stand for the second wicket before the former was dismissed by Devon Thomas, who notably scalped his maiden Test wicket.  While Marnus looked set on the field, Steve Smith could not make an impact in this game and was dismissed for an eight-ball duck by Jason Holder as West Indies received a major boost.

Two centurions keep Australia in dominating position

Marnus Labuschagne was joined by Travis Head after Smith’s dismissal, and the duo batted brilliantly to keep Australia in the driver’s seat at the end of the day’s play. After scoring a double hundred and a century in the previous Test at Perth, Labuschagne went on to hit another brilliant century, and Travis Head joined him in the celebrations soon as he notched up his fifth Test ton.

The two shared an unbeaten 199-run stand for the fourth wicket at the end of the first day and got Australia to 330/3 in 89 overs. Australian batters will be looking to continue the same momentum tomorrow when they start the second day’s play and keep their team in a comfortable position before handing the batting duties to the visitors.
