Paarl Royals and Sunrisers Eastern Cape squared off in the 14th match of the SA20 League at Boland Park in Paarl. The Aiden Markram-led Sunrisers Eastern Cape had been in good touch, winning two consecutive games, and they continued their good form in the tournament by clinching a five wicket victory, their third of the tournament.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape won the toss and put Paarl Royals to bat first. Jason Roy and Jos Buttler opened the innings with the bat, but the former’s poor form continued as he was dismissed for a run-a-ball six shortly after the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed scoring a nine-ball 12. Wihan Lubbe was quick in scoring runs and continued his form, but could not make that big of an impact.

The Sunrisers’ bowlers did their part really well. Brydon Carse, Roelof van der Merwe, and skipper Aiden Markram picked up two wickets each, while Sisanda Magala finished with one scalp to his name. Their constant efforts kept the Paarl Royals batters on the edge as they kept losing momentum in the game, and could manage to score only 127/7 in their allotted 20-over quota.

Marco Jansen finishes off Sunrisers' chase in style

Adam Rossington and Jordan Hermann began the chase for the Sunrisers. The two picked up the pace and got going in the game quickly, but Lungi Ngidi halted their form. The pacer picked up two wickets in two deliveries in the fourth over, and while he dismissed Rossington for a 12-ball 20, he sent Sarel Erwee for a golden duck.

It was then the third wicket partnership between Hermann and Markram which brought the Sunrisers back into the game. The duo added 57 runs in 50 deliveries and played a very composed knock but Bjorn Fortuin spoiled their party. The spinner picked up not just one, but three wickets in the 13th over as Sunrisers’ batting unit came crashing down.

Tristan Stubbs and Marco Jansen held their nerves under the pressure situation. They started off slow, kept rotating the strike, and built the innings steadily. As soon as they were set, Stubbs smacked Evan Jones for a humungous six, and in the very next over, Jansen showed a glimpse of his knock from the previous game.

He hit Codi Yusuf for a four and a six off consecutive deliveries to finish off the chase as Sunrisers Eastern Cape clinched yet another low-scoring game. As a result of the win, Sunrisers Eastern Cape jumped to the second spot in the points table after taking their points tally to 12.
