With the aim to do well and finally win their second T20 World Cup in 2024, India have started their preparations for the mega tournament. In the first T20I against West Indies, the Hardik Pandya-led side handed debut cap to Tilka Varma and Mukesh Kumar, who can prove to be effective for the national team going forward. Team management is also focusing to identify stars who can prove to be dangerous in the shortest format of the game.

Coming to the match, West Indies once again struggled to get going with the bat. Yuzvendra Chahal and Kuldeep Yadav gave the visiting team some momentum early on and that stayed for the rest of the innings. In between, Nicholas Pooran and Rovman Powell tried to create an impact in the middle but the duo failed to capitalize on the start.

In-form batter Pooran hit 41 runs off 34 deliveries while skipper Powell hit 48 runs off 32 deliveries. On the other hand, Indian bowlers enjoyed a good time in the middle. Chahal and Arshdeep Singh picked up two wickets each as West Indies posted 149 runs in the middle.

Coming to the chase, India lost both their openers rather cheaply. Both Ishan Kishan and Shubman Gill played brilliantly in the third ODI and India needed something like that, but neither of the cricketers proved to be valuable.

However, debutant Tilak Varma was really impressive in the middle. The 20-year-old hit 39 runs off 22 deliveries and set the tone of the match but neither of the middle or lower-order batters could capitalise on that. Hardik Pandya and Sanju Samson departed early as India really struggled to get going.

Wickets kept on falling as WI eventually won the game by four runs. Arshdeep Singh tried his best towards the fag end of the match but the Windies bowlers were very disinclined with their line and length. Obed McCoy, Jason Holder, and Romario Shephard picked up two wickets each as the home team took a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.
