Ever since the Indian Premier League (IPL) scheduled was announced, there was huge anticipation about the season opener. The defending champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) facing off the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) is one of the most celebrated rivalries despite the fact that the Men in Yellow have reigned supreme most of the times. The day arrived when MS Dhoni and Virat Kohli clashed and it all turned out to be a damp squib in the end at the MA Chidambaram Stadium.

The hosts won the toss and opted to field first. Dhoni had read the pitch perfectly as he picked only three overseas players in his playing XI. The action began with Deepak Chahar and Harbhajan Singh sharing the new ball. The latter drew first blood by picking the prized scalp of Virat Kohli after which Moeen Ali’s tame dismissal followed. There was hope from AB de Villiers then. But even he played found the fielder perfectly in the deep in the powerplay.

Within no time, the visitors found themselves in trouble 45/5 and the lower order also fell like nine pins. At the other end, Parthiv Patel could only helplessly watch his teammates walk back to the dugout. He applied himself well but a constant fall of wickets led to him playing conservatively. He scored 29 and was the last to get dismissed. Parthiv was also the only batsman to cross the 10-run mark.

For CSK, Harbhajan and Imran Tahir shared six wickets equally while Ravindra Jadeja returned with the figures of 2/15 in his four overs. The Challengers could only muster 70 runs and were bowled out in the 18th over itself.

The chase was never going to be an issue for the CSK. The opening duo of Shane Watson and Ambati Rayudu came out to bat for them. Yuzvendra Chahal opened the bowling for the RCB and he struck straightaway to castle the former. The run-scoring wasn’t easy at all on a treacherous Chepauk surface. But Rayudu and Suresh Raina steadied the ship for the team.

They added 32 runs patiently without much fuss as there was no pressure of the required run-rate. Raina was just finding his groove before he mistimed one to long-off to gift his wicket to Moeen Ali. Meanwhile, the southpaw also became the first player to complete 5000 runs in the IPL. Rayudu looked set to finish the game but he was castled by Mohammed Siraj in the 15th over.

Though there were only formalities left to finish which Kedar Jadhav and Ravindra Jadhav duly completed as CSK began their title defence with a huge win over RCB.
