The third day of the ongoing second Test match between India and England has confirmed that the visitors will have to bat out of their skins to save the game. Chris Woakes was the star of the day as his love affair with the Home of Cricket extended with the bat as well. He remained unbeaten on 120 when the stumps were called after the play was stopped prematurely due to bad light. England have taken the huge lead of 250 runs in the first innings and have effectively batted the opposition out of the game.

Earlier in the morning, the duo of Keaton Jennings and Alastair Cook started confidently with the bowlers all over the place. But Mohammed Shami found his line as he pinned the former in front of the stumps. The wicket geed up Ishant Sharma also he bowled a beauty of a delivery to Cook to leave them reeling at 32/2. Then arrived the debutant Ollie Pope and he looked confident on his debut.

He and Joe Root stitched a decent stand of 45 runs. Just when the youngster was dreaming of reaching a formidable score, Hardik Pandya brought one prodigiously in to pin him. Shami also got Root leg before at the stroke of lunch to end the session on a brighter note for his team. At 89/4, India were well in the game and must’ve hoped to bundle England out under a score of 150.

Woakes and Bairstow flatten visitors

The conditions in the second session eased out considerably as Jos Buttler scored a few quick runs. But even he was dismissed by Shami and at 131/5 there were hopes for his team. Chris Woakes arrived at the crease and things changed pretty quickly. Meanwhile, Jonny Bairstow had got his eyes in. They pummeled the bowlers at will as it stopped moving totally. The pitch had turned heaven for batsmen and both of them took full advantage.

The duo added 189 runs for the sixth and the shoulders in the Indian camp dropped completely. Woakes, in the meantime, completed his exceptional maiden century and looked set to score even more. His partner was also set to get his name on the honours board but his concentration dipped for a second and he chased a wide delivery only to edge it to the wicketkeeper. Dinesh Karthik was up for the challenge and he flew to his right to grab a stunner and break the partnership.

But that was only a consolation to India as the lead had gone past 200. Sam Curran came out and had fun as well with the seventh wicket stand also looking promising. But the bad light came to the rescue of the visitors and the umpires decided to stop the game with England sitting pretty at 357/6.
