The ongoing ODI assignment between New Zealand and England is proving to be a very closely fought contest. In the first ODI, the hosts prevailed in a narrow finish with Mitch Santner showing exceptional batting skills. The visiting English side came back strong in the second ODI, riding on the all-round show by Ben Stokes, to level the 5-match series 1-1. And with that scoreline, action moved to the Westpac Stadium, Wellington for the third showdown.

Coming to the game, New Zealand won the toss and opted to field first. The England innings never really kicked off in the game. Almost every batsman got starts but none could convert them to big scores. Skipper Eoin Morgan top scored for the team with 48 to his name that came off 71 deliveries.

Batting was indeed not an easy ask on the track considering the fact that star of the previous game for the visitors, Ben Stokes, had a struggling time in the match. He could only score 39 runs during his stay at the crease that lasted as many as 73 deliveries. England bundled out 234 in the fifty overs that they batted. Ish Sodhi was the pick of the bowlers for the hosts with figures of 3/53 to his name.

The run chase was a roller coaster ride in itself. After the dismissal of Martin Guptill, the run chase looked in firm control of New Zealand. Colin Munro (49) and Kane Williamson added 68 runs for the second wicket. However, after the dismissal of Munro, the innings crashed and the team reeled on 103/6.

Just when one thought that the Kiwis were down and out, Mitch Santner and Williamson added another 96 runs for the 7th wicket to bring them back in the game. Santner’s untimely dismissal on 41, an uncalled runout, gave England a sniff. Another wicket followed and England’s hold got stronger. Meanwhile, Williamson reached his fifty and inched towards a century as well.

With 22 needed off the last two overs, Williamson hit a four off the first delivery to reach his ton. 15 was needed of the final over and the Kiwi skipper smoked a six in the over bowled by Chris Woakes. In the end, it was just a little too much for Williamson as 5 were needed off the final delivery. Williamson remained unbeaten on 112 (143 deliveries) as England clinched the thriller by 4 runs.
