New Zealand yet again had the upper hand over England on the second day of the all-important second Test match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The well-set middle-order duo of Daryl Mitchell and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell started from where they had left off on the previous day as the English bowlers were made to sweat once again.
Both the batters handled the new-ball bowlers successfully in the morning session and negated whatever advantage the pitch had to offer for the bowlers upfront. Their resistance paid off and both went on to register their respective centuries. Even though this partnership was broken, the English bowlers just did not have too much firepower in their arsenal and the visitors had already posted a mammoth first innings total by the time they were bundled out.
New Zealand dominate on the second day
England Test skipper Ben Stokes ran out of ideas as neither his famed pace attack nor the spinners were able to ask tough questions to New Zealand’s middle-order as Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell seemed to be batting on a different planet. Finally, Jack Leach provided a much-needed breakthrough when he sent back Blundell for a well-made 106 and broke this 236-run fifth-wicket stand.
However, they just could not breathe freely until Mitchell was out in the middle. He kept on toying around with the bowlers and also found support in Michael Bracewell (49). Mitchell looked set for a double-century before pacer Matthew Potts dismissed him for 190 as the Kiwis were all out for 553. Veteran pacer James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers for England with figures of 3/62 while Stuart Broad, Ben Stokes, and Jack Leach picked two wickets each. Matthew Potts also took one wicket.
England in their first innings lost opener Zak Crawley for just four runs before his opening partner Alex Lees and Ollie Pope ensured that no further damage was done throughout the day. Pope even went on to bring up his hard-fought half-century

If Henry Nicholls was fit for the first Test then Daryl Mitchell wouldn't have started the series – he took the opportunity with both hands – 108 at Lord's and 190 at Trent Bridge – he just had 9 match experience before the series and did a remarkable job with bat for Kiwis. pic.twitter.com/ZlveQGQ8lv

Overseas players to have scored 2 test hundreds in England in a test series since 2016:-
•Virat Kohli.
•Steve Smith.
•Shai hope.
•Daryl Mitchell.— CricketMAN2 (@ImTanujSingh) June 11, 2022
If there’s one thing that Boult and Mitchell have shown over the last 2 weeks it’s that the best preparation for a Test series in England is actually sitting in Mumbai having 4 coffees a day and listening to my absolute garbage ☕️ #ENGvNZ

NZers with test centuries in consecutive innings in England:
176 & 175 Bevan Congdon 1973
116 & 105* Vic Pollard 1973
108 & 102* Daryl Mitchell 2022Pollard waited 8 years and 55 innings for a test century then got two in a row. He played just one further test.#ENGvNZ

Pope clearly talented but 1 hundred in 24 Tests at average of 27 shows he's underachieved. Like many other, could argue he's been mismanaged but also hasn't delivered yet. Played well this evening, great opportunity tomorrow #ENGvNZ #Cricket
