New Zealand yet again had the upper hand over England on the second day of the all-important second Test match at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. The well-set middle-order duo of Daryl Mitchell and wicketkeeper-batter Tom Blundell started from where they had left off on the previous day as the English bowlers were made to sweat once again.

Both the batters handled the new-ball bowlers successfully in the morning session and negated whatever advantage the pitch had to offer for the bowlers upfront. Their resistance paid off and both went on to register their respective centuries. Even though this partnership was broken, the English bowlers just did not have too much firepower in their arsenal and the visitors had already posted a mammoth first innings total by the time they were bundled out.

New Zealand dominate on the second day

England Test skipper Ben Stokes ran out of ideas as neither his famed pace attack nor the spinners were able to ask tough questions to New Zealand’s middle-order as Daryl Mitchell and Tom Blundell seemed to be batting on a different planet. Finally, Jack Leach provided a much-needed breakthrough when he sent back Blundell for a well-made 106 and broke this 236-run fifth-wicket stand.

However, they just could not breathe freely until Mitchell was out in the middle. He kept on toying around with the bowlers and also found support in Michael Bracewell (49). Mitchell looked set for a double-century before pacer Matthew Potts dismissed him for 190 as the Kiwis were all out for 553. Veteran pacer James Anderson was the pick of the bowlers for England with figures of 3/62 while Stuart Broad, Ben Stokes, and Jack Leach picked two wickets each. Matthew Potts also took one wicket.

England in their first innings lost opener Zak Crawley for just four runs before his opening partner Alex Lees and Ollie Pope ensured that no further damage was done throughout the day. Pope even went on to bring up his hard-fought half-century
