England fought hard in the fourth day, but Australia are still pretty much in the driver’s seat in the second Ashes Test at the Adelaide Oval. With a day left in the match, chances of England winning the game seem remote as they need 386 runs to get over the line with six wickets in hand. The Aussies are in with a great opportunity of securing a victory and taking a crucial 2-0 lead in the series.

Labuschagne and Head take charge

The hosts started the day with a lead of 282 runs with Marcus Harris and Michael Neser as their overnight batters. But Stuart Broad and James Anderson got two early wickets to give the Brits some hope of a comeback. Ollie Robinson picked up the crucial scalp of Steve Smith and reduced Australia to 55 for four. From there on, Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne steadied the ship for the home team.

Labuschagne scored in the 90s in the first innings and he backed it up with another knock of substance. The right-hander scored 51 before Dawid Malan accounted for his wicket. He was also involved in an 89-run stand for the fifth wicket along with Head. The latter was the more attacking of the two as he made 51 runs with seven fours and played at a stupendous strike rate of 94.44.

England keep straining

Cameron Green also chipped in with a handy 43-ball 33 followed by Mitchell Starc’s 19-ball 20. The Aussies declared their innings on 230 for nine, setting the Three Lions a mammoth target of 468 to chase down. The visitors made a terrible start to their run-chase as Jhye Richardson sent back Haseeb Hameed for a duck in the second over. Rory Burns and Malan tried to restore sanity.

But Neser separated the duo, pinning Malan on 20. Burns put his head down to score 34 off 95 with five fours before he became Richardson’s second victim. The onus was on the two veteran batters, Ben Stokes and Joe Root to take England to safer shores. But Root’s dismissal has left England in dire straits.
