Faf du Plessis played a giant knock for the Royal Challengers Bangalore at the top of the order and was unfortunate to get dismissed on 96. The right-hander played a captain’s innings by carrying the side throughout until the final over after losing the toss and it helped his side post a big total of 181 on the board in 20 overs. This was the perfect opportunity for Du Plessis to get to his maiden hundred in the IPL but was caught in the deep in the final over.

Earlier in the game, RCB lost two early wickets of Anuj Rawat and Virat Kohli in the first over and the onus was on Du Plessis and Glenn Maxwell to take the side to a good total. The duo formed a partnership of 37 until Maxwell perished, while Surya Prabhudessai couldn’t hang around for long as well. At 62 for 4, Du Plessis joined hands with Shahbaz Ahmed and the pair kept finding the boundaries in a partnership of 70 for the fifth wicket. The South African batter was the aggressor of the two and reached his half-century in the process.

Du Plessis takes on the leggie Ravi Bishnoi

Once Shahbaz was dismissed in the 16th over, the man in form Dinesh Karthik came in and gave the strike to Du Plessis who started his assault towards the later stages of the innings. The RCB skipper took on the young spinner Ravi Bishnoi for plenty in his final over and gave the final flourish that was needed to move above the 180-run mark. The number of twos that was run by Du Plessis had to be noted as well and he never seemed to get tired despite staying in the crease since the first delivery.

In the final over bowled by Jason Holder, both Karthik and Du Plessis could not find the boundaries and in an attempt to go big on the fifth delivery, the latter was caught in the deep square leg region to bring an end to a wonderful innings. The 37-year-old has proved to be a sensational pick by the RCB this year so far in terms of his captaincy and now he has proved it through his batsmanship as well.
