Far too often teams fail to click as a team in tournaments and end up short of where they can potentially reach. The current edition of the BBL 2020-21 is turning out to be that kind for the Melbourne Renegades. When their bowlers strike, their batsmen disappoint; when their top-order fires, the middle-order crumbles. And it should, therefore, not be surprising to see them second-last from the bottom in this year’s tally.

Electing to bat first against Sydney Sixers in the 18th encounter, opener, and skipper Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh cruised during their 75-run opening stand. Marsh attacked the bowlers with some authority, picking up boundaries at regular intervals and holding his end up. Finch, on the other hand, looked at ease during his 39-run outing, which included four boundaries.

Renegades lose their way towards the end

It was not until the half-way mark that the Renegades lost a wicket. The opening stand was broken when Daniel Christian struck as Finch miscued a pull to James Vince at backward square. Shaun Marsh then added 49 with Sam Harper for the second wicket before he perished for a solid 67 from 48, featuring five boundaries and a couple of sixes. Trying to clear a Jordan Silk delivery over midwicket, he was caught by Carlos Brathwaite close to the ropes.

Despite a solid platform at the 15-over mark, the Renegades started losing their way as the Sixers’ bowlers fought back. Sam Harper fell to Benjamin Manetti, when he was at 18, as he holed out to deep midwicket, whereas Daniel Christian trapped Rilee Rossouw LBW in the 18th over, before Mohammad Nabi’s short cameo took them to 168 for 6.

Positive start followed by Holder’s punch

During the chase, Josh Phillippe and Jack Edwards powered the Sixers to 53 in just 6 overs before the latter, who scored 21 from 19, deposited a top-edge off Peter Hatzoglou to long-on. Adding 23 for the next wicket with James Vince (13 from 15), Phillippe fell 2 short of his half-century as he skied a slower delivery of Imad Wasim to find keeper Sam Harper. Though Jordan Silk tried his best to keep the runs flowing from his end, losing Vince and their talismanic skipper Daniel Hughes in a space of two overs pushed them into a slight spot of bother.

Coming in at 7, Jason Holder clarified his mood in the 16th over when he slammed Hatzoglou for a six and followed that by 4 to pick 14 from the over. Renegades chipped in by bagging the wickets of Jordan Silk (31 from 23), Carlos Brathwaite (4 from 4), and Ben Dwarshuis (2 from 2), although Holder stood unfazed at his end. Needing 16 from the final over, he rocketed the penultimate ball for a six off Sutherland after slamming two consecutive fours on a previous couple of deliveries to take his side home with 2 wickets and a ball to spare.
