In the last month or so Gautam Gambhir has done most things in his prowess to ensure the national selectors take notice. He is scoring runs, leading a team, the team is winning but that hasn’t earned him a call back. Scores of 77, 90, 59 and 94 in the last 4 innings haven’t given the Indian selection panel enough reasons to pick him in the squad for the home series against New Zealand.

It was not just his own performance but the lack of Shikhar Dhawan’s form that suggested that it could be a prominent opportunity for the other Delhi lad to be recalled. Gambhir last played a Test for India in August 2014 in England where he could do little to impress but ever since in the past two seasons if the Indian Premier League is also taken into account he has been the top southpaw in the domestic arena. Given that he also brings to the table an experience of 56 Tests which is huge since only Ishant Sharma in the current squad has played more.

The Test series against the Kiwis will mark the start of a long home season wherein Virat Kohli & Co. will play 13 Tests until March 2017. The first Test that will be played in Kanpur starts from September 22, while Kolkata and Indore will play host for the 2nd and 3rd matches of the series.

This is the squad that the selectors have opted for: Virat Kohli (C), Wriddhiman Saha (wk), Ajinkya Rahane, Shikhar Dhawan, Rohit Sharma, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Amit Mishra, Mohammad Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, KL Rahul, Umesh Yadav, Murali Vijay
