In what was an exciting game at the PCA stadium in Mohali, Gujarat Lions in spite of being out of the tournament managed to crash Kings XI Punjab’s chances. With this win, Gujarat Lions rose a spot above to the sixth spot while Kings XI Punjab remain at the fifth spot.
Earlier in the day, it was Captain Suresh Raina who won the toss as the Gujarat Lions elected to field first. Dhawal Kulkarni came in for the injured Brendon McCullum. Kings XI Punjab also made one change with Manan Vohra making way for Gurkeerat Singh Mann.
Batting first, Kings XI Punjab lost Martin Guptill in the very first over as he tried to slog. From there on, Hashim Amla and Shaun Marsh compiled a brilliant 125 run partnership from just 89 balls for the second wicket. Marsh went on to score a spectacular half-century.
However, the star of the day for the Kings XI Punjab batting lineup was Hashim Amla who went on to score his second century in this season. In an innings of 104 runs from just 60 balls, Amla hit 8 boundaries and 5 maximums. After he got out, Glenn Maxwell chipped in with a crucial cameo as Kings XI Punjab went on to post a total of 189/3.
Dhawal Kulkarni was exceptional among the Gujarat bowlers with figures of 1/24. Pradeep Sangwan got the wicket of Guptill while Basil Thampi also struck once but was quite expensive. The other bowlers were also taken away for the cleaners.
Gujarat Lions began in an emphatic fashion as Dwayne Smith launched his power hitting to the Kings XI Punjab bowlers. Also not to forget, the fielders added to the misery by dropping Dwayne Smith twice who took full advantage as he went on to smash 74 runs from just 39 balls.
After Smith’s dismissal, captain Suresh Raina took over with a gritty knock of 39(25). At the end of the day, the match came really close before Dinesh Karthik made sure Gujarat Lions chased the target with 2 balls to spare as they won the game by 6 wickets.
Sandeep Sharma was the lone bowler with spectacular bowling figures of 2/29. Natarajan and Maxwell also got a wicket each but went for too many runs. Varun Aaron had a forgettable day as he conceded 43 runs. Dwayne Smith after a poor run, finally stepped up as he was rewarded the man of the match.

Such a calm, magnificent finish from @DineshKarthik. But what about the #KingsXI fielding? How do you win with that?

Always stay ahead of the game. A couple of quiet overs, a mishit and the game can change.

There's a bit of DD in KXIP today. Just that Maxwell isn't as chilled as Zaks, could punch a player or an umpire pretty soon #KXIPvGL
