It was a sensational performance from Team India as many had written them off after the Lord’s debacle. It all started with the openers blunting the new ball with patience and then the middle-order cashed in beautifully. Ever since Hardik Pandya took his maiden five-wicket haul, it was all one-way traffic. However, Jasprit Bumrah stole the limelight in the end with the second new ball late on the fourth day. But England’s tailenders didn’t give up and kept them only 1 wicket away from victory

The duo of Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler were batting really well as they forged a brilliant stand of 169 runs which made the Indian fans nervous. After getting together at 62/4, they batted with patience and with a stroke of luck early on. The second session though greeted them with clear skies and suddenly there was no help for the bowlers. Buttler was also dropped on 1 run by Rishabh Pant.

Bumrah on fire

For almost four hours the visitors were without a wicket and they had also lost a review in desperation. But the second new ball changed the things dramatically. Jasprit Bumrah was brought back into the attack and he struck in the second over of his spell to pin Buttler, the centurion, in front of the stumps. It was a wonderful innings from him and surely has cemented his position no doubt.

The injured Jonny Bairstow was castled off the very next delivery as the Indians got an opening from one end. Bumrah was on fire as he bowled a searing bouncer to Chris Woakes which he gloved like the first innings. Meanwhile, Stokes was watching everything from the other end and was dejected after his partner Buttler was dismissed. However, he also got a snorter from Pandya and was caught in the slips on 62.

It was only a matter of time then for India to clean up the tail but they fought well and took the game to the fifth day only to frustrate the visitors.

Exceptional morning session

Earlier in the morning, the onus was on the openers of the home side to give them a decent start. Ishant Sharma bowled probing lines and scalped Keaton Jennings in the very first over of the day. Soon Alastair Cook edged one in the hand of slips where KL Rahul was ever so aware. Bumrah was in the action then as Joe Root was sent back and Ollie Pope followed him in the very next over. At 62/4, it looked like the game would finish soon, but there was a little anti-climax thanks to Stokes and Buttler.
