Persistent rain in Sydney didn’t allow any play on the fifth and final day of the fourth Test. Finally, the officials came together and decided to call off the game. India won the series by 2-1 to seal their first series win in SENA countries since 2009 when they had beaten New Zealand by 1-0. Virat Kohli also became the first Asian captain to win a Test series in Australia.

The series began with India sliding to 41/4 in Adelaide after opting to bat first. But Cheteshwar Pujara’s exceptional ton made sure that the visitors posted a competitive total on the board and then the bowlers ripped apart the opposition line-up to eke out a crucial lead. The second innings saw a better batting performance from India and though Australia’s lower-order threatened, the hosts lost the game to concede the lead.

Perth Test witnessed the home side’s real strength as they stunningly made a comeback to level the series. However, Melbourne Test was a complete annihilation for Australia. Pujara and Kohli ground them down as India batted for close to a couple of days then skittled them out twice to win by 137 runs.

Formalities completed in Sydney

The rub of the green went Kohli’s way in Sydney as well as he won the toss on the flat pitch and batted first. India amassed 622 runs in the first innings and once again it was Pujara’s defiance which deflated the bowlers. Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja sucked life completely out of them. It was only a matter of time then when the tourists were going to hug the glory.

2-1 or 3-1 that was the question and Kohli was keen on making it latter. But the rain gods had different ideas as they allowed only 25.3 overs of play in the last two days eventually not allowing India to win the series 3-1. Overall, it was a team effort this time around and finally after coming so close and promising so much in South Africa and England, Team India has managed to win overseas and they’ve conquered a fort which most countries only dream of doing it.

Social media was flooded with the congratulatory messages for the team and the current and former cricketers from both the countries lauded Kohli-led India.
