Team India has won yet another ODI series at home as they thumped Windies by nine wickets in the fifth and final ODI at the Greenfield Stadium in Thiruvananthapuram. The batsmen didn’t even break a sweat chasing down a meagre total of 105 runs and lost only Shikhar Dhawan‘s wickets in the process. The visitors never arrived at the venue it seemed as they put up a reckless performance as a lot was expected from them.
Shikhar Dhawan, after winning the Man of the tournament in the Asia Cup, strangely had a below-par series. He was castled by Oshane Thomas and could muster only six runs. Virat Kohli walked and began his innings with a classic straight drive as the crowd went berserk. He soon followed it up an exquisite cover-drive as well to leave everyone in his awe. Meanwhile, he was dropped by his counterpart Jason Holder off the same bowler while on 4.
Rohit, on the other hand, was struggling a bit at the start on a two-paced wicket. But as soon as he found his groove, the opening batsman hunted the leather brutally completing his 37th ODI half-century off just 44 deliveries. He unfurled a lot of shots in his kitty after being reprieved by a no-ball after edging the ball to the wicketkeeper.
Eventually, amidst all the drama, India sealed the chase with no real fuss in the 15th over itself to end the whole game within 50 overs. While Rohit remained unbeaten on 63, Kohli scored 33 runs during his stay at the crease. It was an exceptional performance from the Men in Blue who upped their game after falling short in Pune.
Holder and Co crumble
Many were surprised when Jason Holder opted to bat first after winning the toss. The overcast conditions were the best time to move the new cherry and it worked for India. Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah struck in their very first overs which pegged the Windies back. Though Marlon Samuels and Rovman Powell tried to make amends, the run-rate was very low. The pressure kept on increasing on the batsmen and the false shots were induced eventually.
If Bumrah and Bhuvi tied them up at the start, Ravindra Jadeja just didn’t let the opponents off the hook. He ended up picking four wickets once again thanks to his tight lines. Fittingly, he picked the last wicket as well to end with the figures of 4/34. Kuldeep Yadav also had some fun bowling as India put up an emphatic show in the last two matches of the series. The left-arm spinner deservedly won the Man of the Match award while Kohli, hands down, was awarded Man of the Series.
Here’s how Twitter reacted during the course of the game:
