The Oval Invincibles haven’t been overly confident in the Men’s edition of the Hundred. However, the team, led by Sam Billings, won their third game on Sunday and moved to second in the points table. At the Kennington Oval, they got past Trent Rockets, the table toppers, by nine runs.
Jason Roy comes to the party
After being asked to bat first, the Invincibles got off to a thunderous start. Jason Roy and Will Jacks’ 39-run stand off 18 balls laid the platform for the others. Though Jacks got out to Tim van der Gugten after scoring 13, Roy carried on and notched a stupendous half-century.
He stayed unbeaten on 56 off 29 with four fours and as many sixes. One six each from Colin Ingram, Alex Blake, Tom Curran and Laurie Evans took the Invincibles to 125 off 65 balls in the rain-curtailed match. For the Rockets, Samit Patel was the most successful bowler with two wickets.
Bowlers restrict the Rockets
In their run-chase, the Rockets had their fair share of jitters. D’Arcy Short, Dawid Malan and Tom Moores failed to get into double digits. Alex Hales looked settled in the middle after which Sunil Narine castled him. Hales made 25 off 15 with the help of three fours and one six.
Patel, Steven Mullaney, skipper Lewis Gregory and Rashid Khan got starts. But their knocks went in vain. Gregory Tried hard, having scored an unbeaten 21-ball 28 with four fours and one six. For the Invincibles, Narine picked up three wickets while Curran and Tabraiz Shamsi got two wickets each.
Roy opines
After the Invincibles’ victory, Roy, the Player of the Match, stated that he tried to take advantage of the on-side boundary. Overall, he was happy with how his team performed against the toppers in the encounter.
“Yeah, had a lot of fun. There was no real gameplan, just went there to slog it. Tried to pick the right bowlers and there was that very short boundary on one side. We have been searching for that one performance where we ticked all the boxes. Today was probably that,” Roy was quoted as saying.
