Indian opener Rohit Sharma with all the reputation on his side has been a shadow of himself in the ongoing tour of South Africa. He landed in the country on the back of some tremendous form. He had hit his third double ton in ODIs and equalled the fastest T20I century record against Sri Lanka before the away tour. However, he’s struggled miserably to replicate himself against the Proteas.

Sharma’s troubles in the Test series were understandable since that isn’t his strongest suit. But his persistent failures in the ODI series is a real concern for the Indian team. In the opening ODI, he scored 20, it was down to 15 in the next where he was the only batsman from the visiting camp to be dismissed. In Cape Town where India gained an unassailable lead, he was dismissed for a duck.

His opening partner Shikhar Dhawan who was rather expected to find the going tough against the Proteas has scored two half centuries in the last couple of games and a 35 in the first.

There already was pressure on him to get the runs in the fourth ODI where India attempted to enforce a series win. Skipper Virat Kohli won the toss and decided to bat first. Rohit and Shikhar were up against Kagiso Rabada & Co.

The pacer ran in hard and attempted to get something out of the Wanderers surface. In only his second over he managed to get a leading edge from Sharma’s bat and it came back in his direction. The ball was dipping and the batsman would’ve hoped it’d fall short but Rabada went down in his follow through and grabbed it inches from the pitch. It was an amazing effort from the big fast bowler and he deserved every bit of that wicket.

The pacer plucked a really good catch to make an early inroad in the Indian line-up and once again bring Kohli to the crease. They’d now hope to get the big man early and then test the strength of the Indian middle order. With this, Rohit now has an average of 11, the worst in any country by a specialist Indian batsman.

Here is how Twitterati reacted to his early dismissal:
