The series of narrow finishes in the ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League continued in the match between the Delhi Daredevils and the Kings XI Punjab. The Kings eked out a narrow four run win against the Daredevils in the latter’s first home game. Unlike the previous close shaves of the season, this particular game was a low scoring affair. The hosts had to chase a modest 143 for the win.

They lost the plot big time by losing their top order quickly. Shreyas Iyer managed to keep them in the hunt till the very last over of the match. However, his efforts of a fifty went in vain as he failed to connect the last ball for a six. The DD needed 5 to win on the final delivery, and Iyer ended up holing out in long off. The Kings XI Punjab registered yet another win, and the Daredevils lost their fifth match of the season.

Earlier in the game, it was Gautam Gambhir who had won the toss and had opted to field first. The Delhi camp was delighted to see no Chris Gayle in the opposition side. This, at the same time, came as an opportunity for Aaron Finch to perform in the game. However, Avesh Khan bowled a fiery spell up front to dismiss Finch on 2. KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal also found it tough to score on the Kotla track and could only reach the 20s.

In the middle-order, Karun Nair (34) and David Miller (26) made notable contributions as Kings XI Punjab posted 143/8 in their 20 overs. For the Delhi Daredevils, Liam Plunkett, the debutante, was the pick of the bowlers with 3/17 to his name. The run chase of 143 looked like an easy one but tricky at the same time. The surface at Kotla looked on the slower side and hence, both sides had an equal opportunity to win the match.

Prithvi Shaw, who made his debut for the DD side, smashed a quick 10-ball 22 to give a brisk start to his side. He was dismissed in the third over by Ankit Rajpoot. After his departure, the wickets started falling in regular intervals with no batsman stepping to the occasion. At 76/5, the Delhi batting had severely imploded.
