In what was a run fest at the Wankhede stadium, Kings XI Punjab managed to stay in contention for a spot in the playoffs. Mumbai Indians, on the other hand, lost their second consecutive game as they fell 7 runs short of the target. Earlier in the day, it was captain Rohit Sharma who won the toss as Mumbai Indians elected to bat first. They had an unchanged playing XI from their last game. As for the Kings XI Punjab, Swapnil Singh made way for Ishant Sharma.

Martin Guptill who seemed to be missing his touch of late managed to display his valour. His 36 off 18 balls provided the kind of kickstart Punjab needed in their innings. Captain Glenn Maxwell also played a sensational knock of 47 runs from just 21 balls with 5 sixes.

However, the star of the day was Wriddhiman Saha who played a whirlwind innings of 93 runs not out from just 55 balls, missing out on a well deserved century. Shaun Marsh and Axar Patel did provide decent cameos as Kings XI Punjab posted a mammoth total of 230/3.

It was clearly not a day the bowlers would like to remember. Even then, Jasprit Bumrah stood out with exceptional bowling figures of 1/24 in his quota of four overs. None of the other bowlers managed to apply any kind of pressure. Even the likes of Mitchell McClenaghan, Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh were not spared.

Mumbai Indians just got the kind of start they needed. Both openers Lendl Simmons and Parthiv Patel put up a spectacular 99-run partnership for the opening wicket off just 52 balls. While Simmons went on to score 59 (32), Parthiv also did well for his 38 (23).

The quick dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Nitish Rana did shake Mumbai up a bit as they slump to 121/4. From there on Kieron Pollard and Hardik Pandya together displayed some tremendous power hitting all over with 55 runs from 21 balls for the fifth wicket partnership.

At the end, Pollard scored a sizzling half century but couldn’t take Mumbai Indians through as they lost by 7 runs. Sandeep Sharma and Mohit Sharma bowled their hearts out in the last two overs as they managed to bring a smile on owner Preity Zinta’s face.
