Eoin Morgan, the 2019 World Cup-winning captain, has been picked to play for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Morgan has been a crucial member of the Three Lions for quite a few years and has also flourished as a skipper. The southpaw was one of the names to watch out for in the most awaited IPL auction in Kolkata.

He had a base price of INR 1.5 crore to start with, numbers which aren’t intimidating, going by the records he has garnered over the years. He had last played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) before being released. In the auction, Delhi Capitals (DC) started the bidding after which the Men in Gold and Purple entered. The two teams thereafter went into a bidding war for Morgan.

Eoin Morgan- A Knight Rider

Both teams didn’t drop the gun by any stretch of the imagination. It was KKR, who needed Morgan the most as after the departure of Gautam Gambhir, the franchise was looking for a captain. On the other hand, the Capitals already had a young skipper in the form of Shreyas Iyer, who did a great job in the last edition of the T20 championship, having captained the side to the Qualifier 2.

In the end, the Capitals opted out of the bidding. At that point in time, Morgan’s price was INR 5.25 crores. No team opted to bid for him and Morgan will now be donning the Knights’ jersey. Brendon McCullum, the head coach of the Knights, seemed over the moon on the selection. Earlier, it was learned that Baz and the English share a healthy camaraderie when they played for KKR.

In the last two seasons of the IPL, Dinesh Karthik was the skipper of the Knight Riders. He tried his heart out and took the team to the Qualifier 2 of the IPL in 2018. In the next season, he failed to take his team to the playoffs and hence his captaincy came under the scanner. With the very experienced Morgan in the team, it’s likely that the Englishman will be the skipper.
