Twitter Reactions: Lewis Gregory gives Brisbane Heat first victory of the season

Momentum might be an overrated concept but certainly not when it comes to the shortest version of the sport named cricket. A blink of an eye is sufficient to change the fortunes for any team and the 16th encounter of the Big Bash League (BBL) 2020-21 was but a befitting example of that. Winning the toss, Brisbane Heat’s skipper Jimmy Peirson chose to field. The Hobart Hurricanes started rather placidly as openers D’Arcy Short and Ben McDermott managed only 10 from the first couple of overs.

Struggling to find his rhythm, McDermott was given a life by James Bazley, who dropped him in the third over to deny Xavier Bartlett a breakthrough. However, failing to make any damage, McDermott (16 from 14) fell to Jack Wildermuth in the following over as he holed out to Mark Steketee at long-on. While D’Arcy Short (27 from 20) hung in the middle, he failed to convert his start. Struggling to find their feet already, the Hurricanes were given two successive blows by Lewis Gregory in the 10th over as Dawid Malan (15 from 16) and Peter Handscomb fell off consecutive deliveries.

Colin Ingram (16 from 11) and Tim David (run-a-ball 21) briefly halted the tumbling of wickets, however, some tight spells from Mujeeb ur Rahman and Gregory meant that the Hurricanes failed to break loose. A 35-run stand between James Faulkner, who slammed a six and four in his 26 from 18, and Wil Parker provided some solidity to their total but their late acceleration too could only take them to a below-par total of 148.

Brisbane Heat’s rollicking start before a dramatic collapse

The Heat openers Sam Heazlett and Max Bryant seemed in a rush as they took on the bowlers from the onset. Slamming Scott Boland for 15 in the second over, the duo followed it by an 18-run-over as James Faulkner bore the brunt. To make matters worse. Heazlett was dropped twice in consecutive overs. Putting themselves in command, the duo added 73 runs for the opening wicket before Bryant (31 from 19) flicked a length ball from Nathan Ellis straight to Dawid Malan stationed at square leg.

D’Arcy Short then struck to get rid of Dan Lawrence as he cleaned him up to reduce the Heat to 76 for 2. After the rollicking start, none could have imagined a collapse that would follow, and the score soon deteriorated to 102 for 6, with the entire middle-order of the team – Tom Cooper, Jack Wildermuth, and Lewis Gregory – failing to reach even double figures.

Jolted by multiple wickets, Heat’s talismanic skipper Peirson joined James Bazley, who looked unfazed at the other end. Slamming three sixes and a couple of fours in his 19-ball 31, Bazley added 50 runs for the 7th wicket alongside Peirson (16 from 15) as Heat managed to chase the target in 17.2 overs and 4 wickets in hands.
