Bangladesh would have felt some nerves in the first session of their opening Test against Pakistan at the Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium. However, by the end of the day’s play, the Tigers are in a respectable position courtesy of Liton Das and Mushfiqur Rahim. The duo put on 204 runs for the fifth wicket as the home team racked up 253 for the loss of four wickets in their 85 overs.

Pakistan bowlers dominate

Pakistan blasted away in the first session after reducing Bangladesh to 49 for four in 16.2 overs. Saif Hassan started with three fours before Shaheen Shah Afridi sent him back. Shadman Islam promised with as many fours, but Hasan Ali rattled his woodwork to cut short his stay in the middle. Najmul Hossain Shanto made 14 as well and he became Faheem Ashraf’s maiden wicket in the encounter.

Mominul Haque, the Tigers’ leading Test century-maker, couldn’t last long. Sajid Khan sent him back and put the hosts under extreme pressure. Thereafter, Mushfiqur and Liton took charge. To start with, they took Bangladesh to 69 for four in 28 overs. Once they got the measure of the conditions, they showed their class. At Tea, the two batters took their team to 171 for the loss of four wickets.

Mushfiqur, Liton make hay

In the second session, they added 102 runs and both Liton and Mushfiqur notched their half-centuries as well. The Pakistan bowlers kept trying their hearts out, but without much results. Liton has strained to find his feet in T20s of late, but he made amends with his maiden Test ton. The Dinajpur-born brought up his century off 199 balls and gave an account of his sheer class and flair.

Mushfiqur, on the other hand, didn’t play the T20I series against Pakistan, but put his best foot forward in whites. He got to his fifty off 108 balls. The duo also smashed 21 fours and one six during their stay in the middle. As far as Pakistan are concerned, barring Nauman Ali, the other bowlers got one wicket apiece. Liton and Mushfiqur will be looking to add more runs in the second day.
