Melbourne Stars locked horns with Melbourne Renegades in the 30th match of the Big Bash League 2019-20. Glenn Maxwell set the stage on fire with his blistering knock and he successfully managed to pull off a brilliant victory for his side. He played a blissfull knock of 83 runs off 43 balls with seven sixes and one boundary. It also marked the eighth consecutive defeat for Renegades in BBL 2019-20.
After winning the toss, Stars elected to bowl first but they didn’t get off to a good start. Renegades opener looked in full touch and they started smashing the bowlers from the beginning of the innings. Shaun Marsh (63 runs off 43 balls) and Marcus Harris (42 runs off 32 balls) stitched a brilliant opening partnership of 86 runs.
Finally, the dangerous partnership was broken on the back of brilliant fielding effort by Hilton Cartwright as he ran Harris out. Soon, Marsh was dismissed by spinner Sandeep Lamichhane but until then the Renegades had already taken a convincing lead in the match. Beau Webster and Daniel Christian also contributed well as the former muscled 25 runs off 15 balls.
Renegades successfully managed to post a competitive total of 168 runs for a loss of five wickets in stipulated 20 overs. For Stars, Nathan Coulter Nile was the best bowler, who registered good bowling figures of 2/29.
Maxwell leads from the front
Coming onto the chase, Stars didn’t get off to an up to the mark start. They lost their in-form opener Marcus Stoinis in the first over of the innings. The right-handed batsman attempted to go for a six off Samit Patel but ended up giving a catch to Will Sutherland on the third delivery of the innings.
After the early dismissal, Hilton Cartwright (35 runs off 21 balls) and Ben Dunk (14 runs off 15 balls) stitched a partnership of 36 runs before it was broken by fast bowler Richard Gleeson. He dismissed Dunk in the sixth over of the innings. Soon Cartwright also got bowled off leg-spinner, Cameron Boyce.
At that time, Melbourne Stars were reeling at 54/3. Later on, Stars skipper Glenn Maxwell (83 runs off 45 balls) and Nick Larkin (33 runs off 28 balls) knitted a match-winning partnership of 115 runs for the fourth wicket. The duo made the mockery of Renegades’ bowlers.
The right-handed Aussie international played a swashbuckling knock that consisted of seven sixes and one boundary. He turned out to be the main reason behind Stars chasing a target of 168 runs with eight balls to spare. The victory against Melbourne Renegades marked 5th consecutive win for Stars as they are now two points clear of the second-placed Sydney Sixers.
