Twitter Reactions: Michael Clarke announces retirement : Australian captain Michael Clarke announced that the 5th Test at the Oval will be the final Test of his international career. The announcement came after the fourth test in Trent Bridge ended on its third day, as the tourists lost the match by an innings and 78 runs. The Ashes is now back in England’s possession. The speculations on Clarke’s retirement was already around, but with the loss of Ashes and being humiliated by the England side in the third and fourth Test as they wrapped the 5 days match inside 3 days.
Following the game, Clarke talked to Shane Warne who he called his best buddy and someone who he had discussed his retirement with. Clarke said, “I’ll have one more Test and that will be the end of my career,”
“I’m retiring from international cricket. I certainly don’t want to jump ship and leave the boys now, so I’ll play the last Test at The Oval, give it one last crack, but the time is right now.”
“I certainly tried my best, the boys tried their best and we got outplayed. We got beaten. Now it’s time for the next generation of players, the next captain to have his opportunity to try and build the team and get them ready for the next Ashes series.” The defeated captain said.
The international career of a great player ended in disappointment, as neither his batting nor captaincy supported Clarke in this series. With no plans to retire anytime soon, Clarke decided to retire after the second day of the fourth Test. It concluded with a poor performance from the Australian side as England sealed the Ashes 2015 3-1 with a game to go.
