Bangladesh, on Tuesday, May 25, put forth another dominating show in the three-match ODI series against Kusal Perera’s Sri Lanka. The home team came out trumps by 103 runs- DLS Method- at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.

The Tigers were a tad lacklustre with the bat, barring Mushfiqur Rahim, but their bowlers didn’t allow the Islanders to get away. The Lankan batting, again, failed to absorb the pressure.

All they are left with is a chance to salvage some pride in the final ODI on Friday, May 28. Bangladesh also moved to the top spot in the ODI Super League with 50 points.

Mushfiqur Rahim plays a herculean knock

After winning the toss and electing to bat first, the Tigers got off to a blistering start as Tamim Iqbal smashed Isuru Udana for three fours in the very first over. But in the very next over, Dushmantha Chameera trapped Tamim and Shakib Al Hasan, who bagged a golden duck.

The Lankans eked out Tamim’s wicket after taking the DRS. Liton Das was seeming to get his eyes in before Lakshan Sandakan dismissed him for a 42-ball 25. Mosaddek Hossain Saikat, who replaced Mohammad Mithun, couldn’t make much impact, becoming Sandakan’s second victim.

However, Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah stitched together a partnership of 87 runs to bring the Tigers back into the contest. Sandakan broke the stand after he got rid of Mahmudullah, who was batting on 41.

From there on, Mushfiqur took charge and guided the hosts to a respectable score of 246 in 48.1 overs. The right-hander notched his fifty off 70 balls and along with the lower-order batters, he played a matured hand.

The Bogra-born got to his century off 114 balls and was looking set for a final flurry. In the end, he scored 125 off 127 with 10 fours. Mohammad Saifuddin lent him support, but ended up with concussion after which Taskin Ahmed came in as his substitute.

Lankans capitulate yet again

Danushka Gunathilaka and Kusal Perera got the Lankans off to a steady start, but the latter fell prey to a rash stroke. Perera tried to clear mid-on and gave Shoriful Islam his maiden ODI wicket. Mustafizur Rahman gave the Tigers their second breakthrough after he pinned Gunathilaka.

Both openers got into double figures and then perished. Same was the case for Pathum Nissanka, who got out to Shakib Al Hasan after scoring 20 with two fours. Kusal Mendis smashed Shakib for a six over deep mid-wicket after which Mehidy Hasan Miraz trapped him plumb in front.

Dananjaya de Silva tried to rotate the strike before Shakib dismissed him LBW. Dasun Shanaka smashed a six downtown, but he got out to a mistimed slog-sweep off Mehidy. The onus was then on the young Ashen Bandara and Wanindu Hasaranga, who had put forth a spirited show with the bat in the first ODI.

Once the required rate went over seven, the Lankans couldn’t restore sanity in their innings. Hasaranga couldn’t repeat his heroics as Mehidy rattled his woodwork in the 34th over. Mustafizur dismissed the last recognised batter in Bandara, who scored a laboured 31-ball 15.

In the end, the Lankans folded for 151/9 in 40 overs. In the meantime, Shakib also equalled former skipper Mashrafe Mortaza as the Bangladesh bowler with the most ODI wickets. Both bowlers are locked on 269 wickets and Shakib will be looking to take the top spot on Friday.
