Team India secured a win in the fifth and final ODI of the series by a huge margin of a 190 runs as the New Zealanders were rolled over for just 79 runs while setting out to chase 270 runs against Amit Mishra & Co. The Vishakhapatnam wicket for the first time in the series offered real assistance to the slower bowlers in the 50 overs series and we saw how vulnerable the visitors were against quality spin bowling on a pitch that favored them.

Indian leg-spinner Amit Mishra was the wrecker in chief as he used his variations superbly well. He bowled a lot slower, mixed up his leg-spin and the googly’s perfectly to leave the Kiwis with no clue. The first wicket he got on the night that of Ross Taylor. He was caught behind of a wider delivery that turned the conventional way. He set up the incoming batsman BJ Watling up and then tossed up a googly he played for the one that turned away while the ball beat him completely and made its way between his bat and pads to strike into his timber.

With slips and close-in fielders around Jimmy Neesham chose defense as his option but Mishi once again the gap between the bat and pad and Neesham’s stumps were off their place. His bowling partners Axar Patel and Jayant Yadav found a wicket each and skipper MS Dhoni then brought back his leggie to finish things off. When the top order failed to read Mishra and his well-disguised spin the tail had no chance.

Tim Southee was dragged in front but the ball gave his bat a miss and landed in Dhoni’s gloves; one of the fastest hands behind the stumps the Indian skipper dislodged the bails while Southee’s foot was still in the air, that was the fourth wicket and New Zealand were 8 down. He completed his five-wicket haul with the scalp of his counterpart leg-spinner Ish Sodhi who top-edged one to Ajinkya Rahane who was standing in the slips.

This was the second fifer of Mishra’s ODI career, he also finished with 15 wickets in the five-match series and didn’t just bag the Man of the Match but also the Man of the series for his consistent performance right through as Team India won the series 3-2.
