In the final match of Group stage in the 2018 Asia Cup, Afghanistan brushed aside Bangladesh by 136 runs in Abu Dhabi. Moreover, they topped Group B. Bangladesh had the upper hand till the 40th over of the Afghan innings, but thereafter some lusty blows from the lower order batters helped the Afghans to a significant score after which the spinners restricted the Bangladeshi lineup.
Naib-Rashid blitz propel Afghanistan’s score
Asghar Afghan won the toss and had no hesitation to bat first, but the start wasn’t great for them by any means as debutant left-arm seamer Abu Hider Rony nipped out Ihsanullah Janat and Rahmat Shah in quick succession. However, Mohammad Shahzad and Hashmatullah Shahidi put on 51 runs for the third wicket. Shakib Al Hasan broke the partnership. The Afghan skipper faultered for the second time.
He became Shakib’s second victim. Shah and Samiullah Shenwari tried to get things back on track, but the latter fell prey to Shakib. To add to Afghanistan’s agony, Rubel Hossain got rid of Shahidi, who scored a well compiled 92-ball 58. It eventually required a stand of 95 runs from 55 balls between Gulbadin Naib and Rashid Khan. who notched a 32-ball 57, to lift the Afghans up to 255/7 in 50 overs.
Bowlers strangle Bangladesh
Bangladesh made a horrendous start to the run chase as Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Aftab Alam got rid of both the openers- Nazmul Hossain and Liton Das. Naib picked up the third wicket in the form of Mominul Haque. Mohammad Mithun couldn’t survive the heat either. Shakib and Mahmudullah tried to put their heads down but Rashid ran through Shakib’s defence to break the stand.
Soon after Mahmudullah played down the wrong line to Rashid and saw his stumps clattered. Mehidy Hasan went for a drive but became Rahmat Shah’s first victim. Mashrafe Mortaza’s horror day came to an end with an 11-ball duck as Nabi picked up his first wicket. Mosaddek Hossain played some strokes, but they were far from enough to take Bangladesh over the line.
Here is how Twitter reacted
Such a joy to watch this wonderfully gifted and talented Afghanistan team! They have made incredible progress in such a short time. A real force in white ball formats, the cricketing world must watch out.

There’s no dead rubber for Afghanistan….every game is a celebration from them. First Sri Lanka and Now, Bangladesh. If they win two out of the three tosses in Super-4, they will reach the finals. #AsiaCup

This Asia Cup is a joke, and just a silly cover to contrive a 3-match India-Pakistan bilateral series in the Gulf. Only brave Afghanistan can upset this. Let’s hope they do
