Banters on Twitter have become a normal phenomenon. Often it is fans taking digs at each other and sometimes even the players take friendly jibes across the board. However, things took an ugly turn as former South African cricketer Herschelle Gibbs tried to poke one at India‘s Ravichandran Ashwin.
While Ashwin was promoting a shoe brand on Twitter, Gibbs tried to see the funny side of it. He hoped that this would help Ashwin run faster since he’s known to be slow. However, the Indian off-spinner had a really blunt response that left everyone shocked.
“Surely not as fast as you did mate, unfortunately, I wasn’t as blessed as you were. But I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate.” Ashwin tweeted so as the whole Twitterati was taken aback by that.
Gibbs tried to be the better person and slipped off. However, Ashwin went out to give clarifications over his tweet and deemed it as a joke. While some of the Twitter users felt that the Kings XI Punjab player was right at his place, others severely criticised him for failing to take a joke in the right sense.
The 31-year-old has been regarded as one of the greatest Indian spinners. He has accounted for over 500 wickets across international formats. However, of late, he has failed to make it into the limited-overs team. This has much to do with the tremendous form displayed by the wrist spinners.
As usual, Twitter showed it’s creativity in trolling Ashwin. Many felt that he crossed the line and shouldn’t have made personal remarks on the former South African opener. Others also took the opportunity to troll his association with Chennai Super Kings, since the franchise was banned on charges of corruption.
Here’s how Twitter reacted to Ashwin’s comment on Gibbs:
Fuck sake. Thought Ashwin is the only guy in our team who can take banter. That was brutal tbh.

Ashwin very obviously just saw Black Panther and decided he had had enough with the whites.

Thank you Ash for the spice.
Day was going very dull.— Athar ? (@cricdrugs) February 19, 2018
Ashwin deleted his tweets. Yerrr frustration and non-selection will do that. Those tweets came from a dark place

Waiter: What will it be, gentlemen?
Gibbs: I'll have the smoked salmon
Ashwin: I was blessed with a wonderfully ethical mind not to fix games which put food on my plate

Could have said 1000 things other than taking a personal dig. Could have just said, I don't go around dropping World Cups, or anything. Anyway, just my view. No threads, thanks and sorry.

Like you get pull down from the Test playing XI when playing outside Asia? ?

Lets not forget @ashwinravi99 played for a corrupt, tainted team, refused to speak up even after charges against their "enthusiast" were proven and compared their return to Manchester United's return after the Munich air disaster and spun it into a joke on being called out.

Frustrated Ashwin can sense his end just the matter of time before chahal will be drafted into the test side then kuldeep chahal will be lead spinners in tests too…ashwin might not find a place even in the tests in subcontinent.

Lol. What idiotic cover up! Pull up bro! Frustration of not being in team is getting better of you. A simple apology would have been nice but you are still neck deep in arrogance. Not your fan anymore.

Totally unnecessary from Ashwin. Showed great patience when he went wicketless. Why such a departure from one's original self now? pic.twitter.com/ib89OoqER6

Not the first time Ashwin has snapped. Not the first time an Indian off spinner has snapped. Somehow India produces the most mild-mannered fast bowlers and the most combative spinners. pic.twitter.com/M8SOsulCZR
