After losses in their first two games, Barbados Royals have made a stupendous comeback in the 2021 CPL. The Jason Holder-led unit beat the Jamaica Tallawahs by 15 runs to register their maiden win of the tournament. In the meantime, the Tallawahs lost their first game of the T20 league.

Phillips and Reifer step up

The Royals opted to bat first and put up a score of 161 for the loss of five wickets. Shai Hope and Kyle Mayers perished cheaply, but Johnson Charles’ 17-ball 25 set the tone for the innings. Glenn Phillips, in the previous seasons, played for Jamaica and he brought all his experience to the fore.

The right-hander stayed not out on 56 off 46 with six fours and one six. Jason Holder and Azam Khan got into double digits, but couldn’t convert. However, Raymon Reifer chipped in with an unbeaten 20-ball 31 with two fours and sixes apiece. The southpaw also stitched together a stand of 79 runs with Reifer.

Reifer steps up with the ball

The Tallawahs strained throughout their run-chase. Chadwick Walton, Haider Ali and Rovman Powell failed to get into double digits. Kennar Lewis, who impressed one and all against Saint Lucia Kings, got out cheaply as well. However, Shamarh Brooks and Carlos Brathwaite brought them back in the hunt.

The duo put on 66 for the fifth wicket off 54 balls. In the 15th over, Reifer got rid of Brathwaite and then sent back Andre Russell for a golden duck. Brooks scored a 45-ball 47 with six fours, but his knock went in vain. Reifer picked up three wickets and got the Player of the Match award.

Raymon Reifer opens up

After the Royals’ win, Reifer said how he planned his partnership with Phillips. He also talked about the plans of dismissing Russell, who was coming off a 14-ball 50 against the Kings.

“When I came in, I was just looking to knock the ball around, we (with Glenn Phillips) were looking to build a partnership and then played our shots in the last three overs. It was all about executing the plans (against Andre Russell), just focusing on hitting the lengths. It means a lot, they have always supported me right through (on his family),” Reifer was quoted as saying.
