Guyana Amazon Warriors, on Wednesday, defeated Trinbago Knight Riders at the Warner Park after the match went into the Super Over. Despite the win, the Warriors stayed fourth in the points table. The Knights, on the other hand, are at third but are yet to win back-to-back matches.

Shepherd and Hafeez shine for the Warriors

After winning the toss and electing to bat, the Warriors restricted the Knights to 138 in 20 overs. Colin Munro top-scored for TKR with a 28-ball 32, laced with two fours and as many sixes. In the end, it was Isuru Udana’s nine-ball 21 that lifted the Knights to a respectable score.

Lendl Simmons’ poor form in the CPL continued as he got out for a duck. For the Warriors, Romario Shepherd and Mohammad Hafeez were excellent as they picked up three wickets each. Chandrapaul Hemraj, Naveen-ul-Haq, and veteran Imran Tahir accounted for one wicket each.

Warriors get come

In the run-chase, the Warriors strained for the most part until Nicholas Pooran’s 15-ball 27 changed the course of the game. Hafeez and Shimron Hetmyer scored 16 and 27 respectively, but couldn’t get going. In the end, Shepherd’s 18 and Naveen’s 13 helped the Warriors end with 138.

In the Super Over, Akeal Hosein dismissed both Pooran and Hetmyer and restricted the Warriors to six. Thereafter, Shepherd came in and removed Kieron Pollard in the very first ball. From there on, Tim Seifert and Colin Munro couldn’t score the runs as the Warriors secured their second win.

After his team’s win, Shepherd said that Pooran wanted him to bowl the Super Over. He also understood the importance of Pollard’s wicket. Pollard, on the other hand, talked about showing some intent and also had words of praises for Akeal Hosein’s bowling and fielding.

Should have got over the line: Kieron Pollard

“The coach told me before I went to bat that I’d bowl the over. I asked them once again during the over, Pooran said that I was going to bowl. I was confident, Pollard was the key wicket, it put them on the back-foot, and with 7 needed I backed my strengths. I’m pleased, I’m developing as a batsman, I want to go out there and finish games for my team,” Shepherd said.

“Should have got over the line. Pitch has been challenging, no doubt about it. Still need to show some sort of intent. Still think we were short on runs. After getting the wicket of Nicholas we should’ve been tighter. [Akeal’s catch] brilliant. Throughout the tournament, he’s been fantastic. Defending 8 off the last over shows the talent of the man,” Pollard said.
