Brisbane Heat have finally opened their account in the team standings as they thrashed Melbourne Renegades by five wickets to record their maiden win in Big Bash League (BBL) 2021-22. It was indeed a convincing victory as the Heat chased down 141 with as many as 19 deliveries to spare. While Sam Heazlett stood out with the bat with an unbeaten 44, James Bazley impressed with his all-round show.

Earlier in the game, Brisbane Heat won the toss and opted to bowl at the Carrara Oval in Queensland. The Renegades got off to a steady start with Mackenzie Harvey and Sam Harper adding 38 runs for the first wicket. However, momentum swung towards the Brisbane team’s favour after Harper got dismissed in the seventh over. The Renegades middle-order couldn’t click as the side suffered a batting collapse.

Nonetheless, Harvey held one end and kept his side in the hunt. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the southpaw showcased immense character and slammed a fighting half-century. He, in total, slammed 71 off 56 deliveries as the Melbourne-based team finished at 140/6 in their allotted 20 overs. James Bazley was the pick of the bowlers for Brisbane, having scalped three wickets.

While the target didn’t seem daunting, it wasn’t really a cakewalk for Brisbane Heat. They got off to a flying start with Chris Lynn and Max Bryant attacking bowlers from the outset. They added 46 runs in four overs and Renegades’ defeat seemed a mere formality. However, the fall of some quick wickets spiced up the contest.

Thanks to the openers’ blitzes at the top, the scoring rate was never an easy. However, the regular fall of wickets kept the game interesting. Fortunately for Heat, Sam Heazlett came to the party and played some glorious shots all over the park. He scored an unbeaten 44 as the Heat crossed the line in 16.5 overs, winning the contest by five wickets. He was well supported by Bazley, who scored 16 off 12 balls.

Bazley was also named the Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance. “Pleasing to get the first win on the board. The bowlers really did the job well and we batted well enough to close things down. Yeah, that (slower balls into the wicket) was the plan, it always works here and we got into that plan rather early here. As I’m getting older, I’m able to understand my game a lot better,” he said after the game.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Brisbane Heat’s convincing win:
