This was their first test, the result would tell everyone the approach with which they were looking at things and if the immediate response is to be believed. MSK Prasad & Co. have passed it. Selecting their first squad after appointment for the first three ODIs between India and New Zealand the Indian selectors opted to retain the big batting names while giving rest to the two regular spinners.
Rohit Sharma, Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli will lend strength to the batting order while Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja have been rested considering the number of Tests the team will be playing this season.
Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul were unavailable for selections with their respective injuries while young Mandeep Singh who is yet to make his debut benefitted from it and has been included in the team. Another pair of uncapped players in off-spinner Jayant Yadav and all-rounder Hardik Pandya are also a part of the team.
Left-hander Suresh Raina has made a comeback and is a great chance for him to showcase performance worth reconsideration. He has missed out on recent limited-overs opportunities but chief selector Prasad believes that given Raina’s ability with the ball, he will be a crucial player for the team.

The last ODI series that the team played was in Zimbabwe in June where MS Dhoni led a second string squad to make sure the young boys gain valuable experience though playing against a weaker opponent. The selectors have retained Mandeep, Jasprit Bumrah, Kedar Jadhav, Dhawal Kulkarni, Manish Pandey, Axar Patel and Jayant along with skipper Dhoni from that team which beat Zimbabwe 3-0.
Those who featured in the team in Zimbabwe but have been left out here are- Yuzvendra Chahal, Rishi Dhawan, Faiz Fazal, Karun Nair, Lokesh Rahul, Ambati Rayudu, Barinder Sran, Jaydev Unadkat.
Twitterati agreed with most of the selection calls made by the panel while a few of them seemed to have been expecting a recall for Yuvraj Singh but were left disappointed.

Here is how Twitter reacted to the Indian squad selection:
India playing only a handful of ODI before the Champions Trophy in England…whoever needs to be tested, this is the time.

Resting Ashwin, Jadeja and Shami together might lead to losing a game or two but that's a small price to pay for future gains. ??

No point of discussing batting depth if you have Rohit, Virat & Manish in your top 4. A minimum of 30 overs will be played between the 3. ?

Umesh Yadav will spearhead Indian bowling attack. . . . . . Future of skipper Dhoni in Bumrah, Kulkarni's hands ?

Happy to see @ImRaina back. Always go back to class. Also, 6th bowler in Indian conditions. And hopefully clear mandate for Rahane as opener

Obviously Hardik Pandya has impressed those that saw him in Australia. This is an investment in promise.

I will make Raina the captain of Indian team for next 1 year.

And i will open with MSDHONI and Virat Kohli.

The Indian team for the ODIs is a clear reward for those that did well with India 'A'. And clearly Ashwin/Jadeja will play Test cricket only
— Harsha Bhogle (@bhogleharsha) October 6, 2016
I as a captain will play with Manish Pandey till Champions Trophy 2017.

Dhawan dropped (or rested or injured). Ashwin, Jadeja rested rightly. Gives young ones a go at home. Not sure of Hardik, Raina though.
— Nikhil ? (@CricCrazyNIKS) October 6, 2016
News is coming that Jadeja and Ashwin refused to play #IndvNZ ODIs after selectors didnt pick Stuart Binny. Hence, they are not in the squad.

MSK Prasad: @klrahul11 may be a short term wicketkeeping option but we need a long term specialist. We also discussed Samson #INDvNZ
— Jamie Alter (@jamie_alterTOI) October 6, 2016
MSK Prasad: Hardik Pandya bowled exceptionally well in all formats for India A. He and @dhawal_kulkarni did very well. #INDvNZ
— Jamie Alter (@jamie_alterTOI) October 6, 2016
Remember there is no Stuart Binny in the #IndVsNZ squad. How will Legend Rohit get another 200, if bowlers won't concede runs? Disappointed.
— ️Silly Point (@FarziCricketer) October 6, 2016
MSK Prasad: we brought in @ImRaina because he also offers a good bowling option
