St Kitts and Nevis Patriots continued their dream run in the CPL 2021 with their fifth win in succession. In their previous game, they beat the Barbados Royals by two wickets at Warner Park. In the meantime, the Royals kept stuttering at the bottom of the points table with two points.

Smit Patel plays a blinder

After being put in to bat first, the Royals notched 160 on the board. Paul van Meekeren dismissed Shai Hope, but opener Johnson Charles injected momentum into the innings with a 26-ball 30. Charles’ knock was laced with two fours and as many sixes before Sheldon Cottrell removed him.

From there on, Smit Patel, playing his maiden CPL game, came to the party. The India-born batter scored 54 runs off 48 balls with three fours and two sixes. Dwayne Bravo got rid of him in the end. A came of 19 off seven deliver from skipper Jason Holder lifted the Royals to the respectable score.

The Patriots make it five out of five

In the run-chase, Devon Thomas and Evin Lewis started handsomely, but Raymon Reifer got rid of them. Thomas strained a bit as his 26 came at a strike rate of 81.25. Lewis and the hulk-like Chris Gayle stitched together a partnership of 49 runs for the second wicket off 45 balls.

Jake Lintott delivered a body blow as he dismissed Gayle, who scored 42 off 39 with three fours and two sixes. Fabian Allen, Sherfane Rutherford, and Ravi Bopara couldn’t get into the double digits. In the end, Dominic Drakes’ 15-ball 28 and Sheldon Cottrell’s seven-ball 20 took the Patriots home.

Probably 10 runs short from the position we were in: Jason Holder

Dwayne Bravo, the Patriots’ skipper, was over the moon after his team’s win. Holder, the Royals’ skipper, on the other hand, said that his team was around 10 runs short. He also explained why he gave the ball to Ashley Nurse in the last over.

“Happy with five from five. Games like these make us believe. Another great team effort. This is a ground you can chase and credit to the team,” Bravo was quoted as saying after the game.

“I thought it was a good total. Credit to our batters for getting stuck there. Probably 10 runs short from the position we were in but we would have taken it at the start. The wicket was holding and gripping, there was a left-hander at the other end and hence went with Nurse,” Holder said.
