Twitter Reactions: Sydney Sixers stun Stars to qualify for their fourth BBL final

Melbourne Stars locked horns with Sydney Sixers in the Qualifier of the BBL 2019-20. The fans had expected an enthralling contest between the two heavyweights in the high voltage game but that was not the case. The hosts lost the game due to the woeful performance of their star-studded batting line-up. Meanwhile, Sydney Sixers’ successfully managed in securing their place into the finals of Big Bash League 2019-20.

Earlier, Glenn Maxwell won the toss and elected to field. Sixers openers Josh Philippe (34 runs off 28 balls) and James Vince (12 runs off 14 balls) helped their side in getting a good start as the duo stitched a brilliant partnership of 47 runs. The opening stand was broken by leg-spinner Adam Zampa, who castled James Vince in the seventh over of the innings. In the eighth over, Sixers lost their other opener, Philippe, off Haris Rauf.

Later on, Steve Smith scored 24 off 18 balls and Jordan Silk muscled 25 runs off 21 balls to help their side in posting a competitive total of 142 runs for a loss of seven wickets in stipulated 20 overs. Adam Zampa turned out to be the best bowler for the hosts’, who registered amazing bowling figures of 3/21.

Melbourne Stars stumble during their chase against Sydney Sixers

It looked like a cakewalk for the star-studded batting line-up of Melbourne Stars. But astonishing performances given by Sixers bowlers left the hosts struggling throughout their chase. The in-form openers Nic Maddinson and Marcus Stoinis failed to click good knocks with their willow.

Stoinis, who is the leading run-scorer in BBL 2019-20, attempted a mistimed stroke off Ben Dwarshuis and he was caught by Moises Henriques at mid-on. Soon, they lost their middle-order batsmen Nick Larkin (4) and Peter Handscomb (4) in the powerplay. The stars were at a score of 26 runs for a loss of three wickets. Glenn Maxwell also failed in playing useful knock with his bat as he could only muster 16 runs off 19 balls before his innings came to a halt.

Sixers bowlers were bowling at their best as none of them allowed the hosts’ batters to get settled. And, they successfully dismissed their opponent for a score of 99 runs in 18 overs. On the other hand, Melbourne Stars had to suffer a defeat by a big margin of 43 runs in the qualifiers of the Big Bash League 2019-20. This victory also helped visitors’ in securing their place in the finals of the ongoing tournament that is scheduled to be played on February 8 in Sydney.

Sean Abbott registered best bowling figures for Sydney Sixers of 3/23. He was well supported by his teammates from the other end as Steve OKeefe and Josh Hazelwood took two wickets each in the match.
