After a one-sided game the previous day, it was now time for an extremely competitive one. The Sri Lankan side was taking on West Indies who had lost both their matches thus far. The former won the toss and opted to bowl first in this encounter. Fans were delighted as they were about to see Brian Lara come out to bat.
William Perkins was dismissed on the first ball of the third over and out came the big man. The crowd chanting reminded everyone about how some legends are never forgotten. He did not disappoint his fans as he went on to bat till the very end.
He scored an unbeaten 53 off 49 balls to guide his team to a total of 157 runs at the end of their 20 overs. It may seem a touch too slow but for a 51-year-old batsman to walk out and score a fifty against recently retired bowlers was definitely a special effort. Dwayne Smith played an attacking knock of 47 runs to take the pressure off Lara. His knock included four boundaries and three sixes.
Tharanga and Dilshan star in a successful run chase for the Lankan side
Tillakaratne Dilshan and Sanath Jayasuriya walked out to open the batting for their side. The former played some impressive shots and never let his team get behind the eight ball. His knock of 47 runs included eight boundaries. Though Jayasuriya could not recreate his magic, Upul Tharanga played a sensible knock to take his side to a safe victory.
Tino Best sent a few jitters in the Lankan dugout as he took two wickets in the 18th over. However, it was too late by then and West Indies successfully chased down the target in 19 overs. Tharanga completed his fifty off 35 balls by hitting a four on the last ball of the inning.
With this loss, the Caribbean side has now lost all three games in this tournament. They need to improve their performance and quickly bounce back in the upcoming games.
