25th June 1983, A day still fresh in the memory of many Indian cricket connoisseurs. It was the day when Kapil Dev led the underdogs to a World Cup triumph pushing aside the mighty West Indies who dominated the cricket world with their ferocity and daunt.

Having been soundly beaten by West Indies in the group stage, India found themselves staring down the barrel for an encore having being bowled out for 183, a number that turned out to be significant for Indian cricket. A lot of Indians had already accepted the inevitable and switched off their broadcasts.

India’s “Dare to Dream” mindset (which was later injected into the youth who took inspiration) came to the fore as they fought back admirably well, restricting a mighty line up consisting of Vivian Richards, Clive Lloyd and Gordon Greenidge to just 140. Life had come full circle for the Indian team, who refused to give up despite heavy defeats to favourites Australia and West Indies who were expected to trump them to make it to the semis.

More than the day when David overcame Goliath, it was the day when an entire nation was inspired by 11 men to appreciate cricket, follow cricket and emulate their heroes to relive the moment for their country by making their own contributions.

The moment marked the birth of many future cricket stars, Sachin Tendulkar included, and also established the massive fan base that the game deserved. It has been 34 years since India won its first World Cup but the joy that the countrymen experienced still remains unparalleled.

Kapil Dev became a national icon and his team an epitome of determination, grit and resilience. On the 34th anniversary of the triumph, a number of notable Indian cricket followers, as well as experts, took to Twitter to recount the moment of nostalgia and its significance to the History of Indian Cricket.
