Being the top two teams on the points table, the Trinbago Knight Riders hosted Guyana Amazon Warriors for ‘Qualifier-1’ at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. This encounter, unlike most of the other matches, was a low-scoring one. Yet, it was just as intense as the other high-scoring games and kept pumping the adrenaline of the fans right till the last over.

Fortunes kept swaying between both the teams throughout the match. But, it was the Guyana Amazon Warriors who held onto their nerves to bag a two-wicket win. With this victory, the team will proceed straight into the finals. On the other hand, the Knights will have another opportunity. They will be facing the winner of the ‘Eliminator’ in ‘Qualifier-2’ and will be fancying their chances to make it into the final. Shimron Hetmyer, for his counter-attacking innings under pressure, was the ‘Man of the Match’.

Too many wickets crumble in the powerplay for the Knights

After losing the toss, the Trinbago Knight Riders were put into bat first in this match. The team walked out with a new opening pair in Sunil Narine and Brendon McCullum. However, the top three batsmen failed terribly. Both McCullum and Colin Munro were dismissed for a duck within the first two overs. Denesh Ramdin with 15 runs and Narine with 8 runs soon followed them back into the pavilion as the side was down to 26/4.

From this kind of a stage, the focus of any team would be to get to a respectable total at least. Hence, this pushed them onto the backfoot in the game and the rest of the batters played some very cautious cricket. While Colin Ingram scored 25 off 26 balls, DM Bravo and DJ Bravo scored 24 and 22 runs respectively. The team only managed to put up 122 runs on the board in 20 overs after losing 7 wickets.

A precarious chase from the Warriors

In the chase, the Trinbago spinners exploited the slow pitch to the best of their ability to push the opposition onto the backfoot. Opener Cameron Delport got out for just 2 runs while his partner Luke Ronchi got out for 13. The spinners kept chipping in with wickets as the visitors were down to 52/5. But, it was that man, Shimron Hetmyer, yet again, who rose up to the occasion and played a brilliant knock.

He took the attack to the bowlers and briskly got to 39 off 36 balls. But, a wrong call ended him fight as he was run out when the team still needed 21 runs in 3 overs. Shane Rutherford was out on the next ball after smashing 30 off 17 balls. With these two quick wickets, the Knights were sniffing a win. At this point in time, bowling allrounder Romario Shepherd of all the batsmen in the team stepped up and remained unbeaten on 13 off 6 cherries. Sohail Tanvir finished the chase by tonking DJ Bravo for a six of the penultimate ball of the innings to register a 2 wicket win.

Twitterati was highly impressed with the Warriors’ performance. It is the second consecutive loss for the Knights in the tournament. Both these defeats came against the Warriors which didn’t please their fans. However, team owner Shah Rukh Khan urged the fans to stay positive. He wished the best for the team for the next game.
