The second leg of West Indies’ tour of England kicked off with a lone T20 international at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street. The T20 world champions continued to show their authority in the shortest format of the game as they went on to win the match by 21 runs.

Earlier in the day, it was skipper Eoin Morgan who won the toss as England elected to field first. This was the first T20 clash between both the teams ever since the epic World T20 2016 final clash where current Windies captain Carlos Brathwaite smashed Ben Stokes for four sixes in the final over to win the title. Stokes wasn’t a part of the team this time around.

The crowd roared as Chris Gayle walked out to bat alongside Evin Lewis. Gayle didn’t disappoint the fans as he was in the beast mode after two overs of silence. Lewis joined in later, as the duo smashed 72 runs in the first powerplay. A lazy runout cut short Gayle’s inning as he was dismissed for 40(21).

Lewis went on to complete his half century before being dismissed. After the splendid start, Windian batsmen failed to maintain the scoring rate. Wickets kept falling at regular intervals as only Rovman Powell managed to be the saving grace in the end. The visitors ended up scoring a total of 176/9 in their quota of 20 overs which at one point was predicted to be in deep 200s.

English leg-spinner Adil Rashid was the pick amongst the bowlers as he was stupendously finishing with figures of 3/25. Liam Plunkett was also phenomenal with 3/27. Chris Jordan and Tom Curran got a wicket each but were quite expensive.

The hosts had a poor start as Jason Roy was out on the first ball. But his partner Alex Hales played an astounding knock of 43 runs from just 17 balls to initiate recovery. However, once he got out, the middle order collapsed as they lost 3 wickets in the space of 4 runs.

Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow tried to bring the game close but ended up getting out to brash shots. Some brilliant bowling by the likes of Carlos Brathwaite, Kesrick Williams and Sunil Narine ensured that the hosts were 21 runs short of the target.

Twitter was all excited about the one-off clash between both the teams. Right from lauding Gayle-Lewis storm to trolling Windies collapse, right from England’s poor batting to Hales stupendous effort.
