The T20 Blast match between Yorkshire and Leicestershire was a witness to a rather bizarre incident. Generally, a batsman would know whether the ball has made a connection with the willow or not. At times, in case of a thin outside-edge, batsmen are caught unaware, not in case of a thick outside edge. Australian cricketer, Mark Cosgrove’s case was a tad different.

Yorkshire, courtesy of half-centuries from Tom Kohler-Cadmore and New Zealand skipper Kane Williamson, racked up a mammoth 187/5 in their allotted 20 overs. The run-chase was expected to be a stiff task for Colin Ackermann and Co. Cameron Delport and Neil Dexter commenced their innings in a blistering manner, scoring 24 runs from the first couple of overs.

Cosgrove’s gesture angers supporters

Left-arm seamer David Willey nipped out Dexter to draw first blood. Mark Cosgrove, a veteran of 202 first-class, 152 List A, and 121 T20s, came to partner Dexter. He started with a scorching boundary but was unable to carry on as his knock was cut short by Willey in the same over. In the fifth ball of the third over, the left-hander from South Australia went for an expansive drive through the covers.

He played the stroke from the crease and didn’t bother about taking his feet to the pitch of the delivery. He slashed at the delivery with all his might, however, the ball found his outside edge and flew to the wicketkeeper Jonathan Tattersall, who dived full-length on to his left to pluck the leather out of thin air.

Nevertheless, after getting out Cosgrove suggested to the umpire that he the ball didn’t touch his bat. After the ball reached the batsman, there was a significant amount of deviation, which suggested that there was a thick outside edge. Bearing the same in mind, Cosgrove’s gesture was a tad bewildering.

Meanwhile, Twitterati was dissatisfied by Cosgrove’s unsportsmanlike attitude on the cricket pitch. They slammed him left, right and centre.
