The game of cricket has evolved and has been a witness to numerous changes over the years. The primary reason behind the modifications has been to remain in sync with the dynamics of the sport. The toss in an integral aspect of a contest and is an age-old tradition, which started way back in March 1877 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a Test match between Australia and England.

Ever since the toss has taken place prior to every encounter on the cricket pitch. As far as the rule is concerned, the home captain flips the coin up in the air after which the visiting team’s skipper calls either of heads or tails. The winner of the same takes a call on whether to bat or bowl first. Meanwhile, the toss also makes a significant impact as far as the eventual result of the match is concerned.

A new rule in place?

However, the 150-year old spectacle might be abolished in the near future. A recently-formed committee of the International Cricket Council (ICC) is contemplating about doing away with the ‘toss system’ in Test cricket. In that scenario, the visiting captain will be asked for their decision to bat or to have a crack at the opposition with the leather.

A note was circulated surrounding the issue, which gave an insight into their contemplation over the matter. Here is the note of the same.

“There is (serious) concern about the current level of home team interference in Test pitch preparation, and more than one committee member believes that the toss should be automatically awarded to the visiting team in each match, although there are some others on the committee who do not share that view”.

The committee consists of some prominent names from the cricketing fraternity. Former India captain and coach Anil Kumble, Mahela Jayawardene, Andrew Strauss, Rahul Dravid, Tim May, New Zealand Cricket chief executive David White, umpire Richard Kettleborough, ICC match referees’ chief Ranjan Madugalle, Shaun Pollock and Clare Connor are members of the team.

However, the fans aren’t quite happy by the new revelations of the ICC and they lashed out on the cricket board.

Here are their reactions
