Team India dropped Shikhar Dhawan for Lord’s Test and promoted KL Rahul to open alongside Murali Vijay as the play finally started on the second day. The overhead conditions and the moisture in the pitch meant that the hosts had a massive advantage after winning the toss. James Anderson was at his brutal best with the new ball as he scalped both the openers and has put the visitors on the backfoot.

Rahul batted number 3 at Edgbaston and wasn’t able to cash in on the opportunity. In the first innings, he was out only second delivery as he played on the harmless ball from Sam Curran. He looked assured in the second innings though and went on to score 13 runs before he was undone by a near unplayable delivery by Ben Stokes. His wicket also put India under pressure in the run-chase as they eventually lost the game by 31 runs.

Old problems resurface again

KL Rahul was given yet another opportunity by the team management but he once again disappointed by fishing out a ball outside the off-stump. After an early dismissal of Vijay, it was important for him and Cheteshwar Pujara to stay in the middle and see off the new ball. But Anderson was bowling brilliantly and his fourth over of the spell nipped out Rahul as well.

The line and length of the delivery was absolutely perfect to bring the batsman forward which made him play at it only to take a thin edge through to the wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. India are currently 11/2 with the rain stopping the play. But England will be happy that they were able to send back the openers early in a small passage of play.

Twitterati, however, was disappointed with Rahul who failed to live up to the expectations once again. They lashed out at him for his failure and felt that India doesn’t have an opener who can play well in these conditions.

Here’s how Twitter reacted to the dismissal:
