Twitterati exuberated as MS Dhoni gets conferred with the Padma Bhushan

Former Indian skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni was conferred with the Padma Bhushan on Monday. In an event at the Rashtrapati Bhavan today, Mahi was presented the award by Sri Rajnath Kovind, President of India. Dhoni came to the ceremony in his Lieutenant colonel uniform. 

Dressed in uniform, Lt.Col Mahendra Singh Dhoni marched to receive the honor, as his proud wife Sakshi looked on. The Indian Territorial Army had conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel to Dhoni on November 1, 2011, months after India won their second World Cup under his leadership.

The Padma Bhushan is the third-highest civilian award in the Republic of India. It is preceded by the Bharat Ratna and the Padma Vibhushan and followed by the Padma Shri. MS Dhoni became the 11th cricketer to be bestowed with this honor as he received the award.

Furthermore, Dhoni is only the second cricketer after Kapil Dev to be bestowed his the glorious award. Incidentally, Dhoni received the prestigious award exactly seven years since lifting the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011. On this day seven years ago, India ended a 28-year World Cup drought by winning their second title in front of a manic home crowd at the Wankhede Stadium.

Dhoni has been the recipient of many awards, including the ICC ODI Player of the Year award in 2008 and 2009 (the first player to win the award twice), the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in 2007 and the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian honor in 2009.

Fans and cricketers looked overjoyed as MS received the award. The fans were left awestruck seeing MSD marching in the army uniform and couldn’t control their excitement.
