Former Indian skipper and one of the greatest finishers of the game- MS Dhoni will take the field for the 300th time in an ODI, as Sri Lanka are set to take on India in the 4th ODI today. The 36-year old wicket-keeper batsman made his debut against Bangladesh in the year 2004. The most successful captains in the history of Indian cricket, Dhoni has led India to two World Cups ( 2007 World T20I and 2007 World Cup), Champions Trophy, Asia Cup among many.
Two match winning knocks back to back
The middle-order batsman is in fine form at the moment. Dhoni has played two crucial knocks in this series, and interestingly, stayed unbeaten on both the occasions. In the 2nd ODI, when India were restricted to 131/7, courtesy an outstanding spell from Akila Dhananjaya, it was Dhoni who forged a match winning 100-run stand with Bhuvneshwar Kumar to take India home. He scored an unbeaten 47 in that game. In the next game, Dhoni stitched a crucial stand with opener Rohit Sharma to guide Indian home and take an unassailable lead of 3-0 in the 5 match series. Dhoni notched up an unbeaten 67 in the match, after India were restricted to 61/4 at one stage.
With the 2019 World Cup in sight, Dhoni would want to remain as a vital cog in the Indian line up and win more games in the limited overs format of the game. The ongoing series is already dusted and it will be worth watching if Sri Lanka can make a comeback in the series and gain some pride in the remaining two games.
The Indian top order has somehow failed in the last two games, barring Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan; therefore it will be a wake-up call for someone like KL Rahul to cement his place in the side before the home series against Australia.
