Pakistan have undoubtedly been the dominant force in the five-match ODI series against Zimbabwe at the Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo. The first four matches were comprehensively won by the Men in Green and they took a lead of 4-0. The hosts couldn’t match fire with fire and have strained to make any sort of an impact in the 50-overs fixtures. The final match is presently underway and the visitors have again been phenomenal.

Fakhar Zaman, unfortunately, missed out on a century, however, his partner left-handed Imam-ul-Haq made sure that he scored his fourth century in only his ninth match. The top-order has done most of the work and hence, the middle-order has hardly come under the pump. Meanwhile, Babar Azam, one of Pakistan’s most prolific run-scorers in the 50-overs format, scored his eighth century.

Babar blazes away

He came to bat after 18-year-old Liam Roche got rid of Fakhar in the final delivery of the 25th over. The pugnacious potential didn’t blaze away and bided his time in the middle to get the measure of the conditions and the bowling. He accomplished his half-century in 55 balls and looked settled to launch the final onslaught on the hapless Zimbabwean bowlers in the death overs.

The Lahore-born cricketer notched a gear up and reached his century in double quick time. He accomplished the same in 72 balls with a deft touch through third-man off Donald Tiripano in the final over of Pakistan’s innings. The 23-year-old eventually ended with 106 runs from 76 balls, a knock which was carved with nine boundaries and a couple of monstrous blows over the ropes.

He also became the second fastest to eight ODI tons after South African batsman Hashim Amla. The masterclass also ensured that the Men in Green post a mammoth target of 365 for the home team to track down. In the meantime, Twitter hailed Babar for yet another century in the format.
