David Willey has become the third Englishman to get a call-up for the Indian Premier League. Willey is on the cusp of signing for Chennai Super Kings, who lodged his paperwork with the IPL on Sunday evening as a replacement for Kedhar Jadhav, who has been ruled out for the rest of the competition. The team also consists of his fellow England team-mates Sam Billings and Mark Wood. However, Yorkshire is reticent to allow Willey to depart so close to the start of the season, which he was originally set to begin on Friday against Essex.

The county’s issue with this stand justified especially after having lost Liam Plunkett to Delhi Daredevils as a replacement for South African quick Kagiso Rabada, as reported by Cricbuzz. Interestingly, two teams were targeting Willey, the left-arm swing bowler, and hard-hitting batsman, as an injury replacement player. The second team who was in talks for Willey was Mumbai Indians to seek Willey as a replacement for the missing Australian pacer Pat Cummins but Chennai seems to be winning the race.

A move to Yorkshire on the cards for Willey

He needs the move signed off by Yorkshire, whose season starts against Essex on Friday. Willey would have been expected to play in that game and to feature more heavily for the county in Championship cricket than he has in his first two years at the club.

Presently, players on England Test Central Contracts are deducted only 1/365th of their annual retainer for each day they are on IPL duty. It is an improvement from the previous deduction of 0.5 percent. For other players, that figure is one percent of their annual county salary for every day of 21 days, before dropping down to 0.7 percent.

Chennai Super Kings had also lost out on Mitchell Santner ahead of the start of the tournament due to injury but decided against buying a replacement. However, now that two major players have been injured, a multi-dimensional player like Willey is needed to fill the void.
