Several news has emerged of betting rackets being busted across India during the tenth edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). A few days ago, police in Kanpur arrested three bookies who were operating from the team hotel where the Gujarat Lions and Delhi Daredevils were putting up. In connection to that, the Kanpur police have now arrested a boy named Nayan Shah.

Nayan played for Maharashtra Cricket Association

So who is Nayan? Nayan is a former cricketer who played for Maharashtra U-19. As per reports, he charged an advance amount of Rs. 1.5 lakh for offering information on the nature of pitches. Several pictures of the Wankhede pitch were found in Nayan’s phone. He had contact from big bookies for the entire IPL series.

Shah had hired Ramesh Kumar in Kanpur, who was an employee at the Green Park stadium. He worked as a water-boy in the stadium and made Rs 5,000 from the same. However, he would put excess water on the pitch to make it slow, as instructed by Nayan, after which he would then send photos of the pitch to Nayan. Ramesh, who is custody now, has already earned Rs. 20,000 from watering the pitch.

BCCI’s statement

The idea of the group was plain and simple: Get the pitch tampered, and send the information to bookies across the country in return for money.

The BCCI had also released a statement on this issue: “The anti-corruption unit of the BCCI has been tracking activities of certain individuals, as a result of which, three suspects were arrested in Kanpur, on Thursday. The Uttar Pradesh police crime branch could successfully foil the alleged betting attempts of the accused. This was an outcome of the ACU of the BCCI, having worked closely with various law enforcement agencies, who will continue further investigations, in this matter,” the BCCI statement read.
